Akha Swing | Thanksgiving Day 07

Last year was ideal for the swing.

How they got me on the swing I will never know!

Chiang Mai City Akha Harvest festival

The young ladies of Kampangdin sing an Akha song
(and not so young, my wife is at the back somewere out of sight)

Thanks to the rain the traditional Akha swing did not get a lot of use this year

Akha Thanksgiving Day 2008

Thanksgiving day 2008 Sansai, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Held for the City Akha at the local Akha Presbyterian Church Sansai, Chiang Mai.
Akha woman in traditional costume.

Abor
Abor is endearing name for an older man.

The Akha Harvest festival

The City Akha Give thanks for another bountiful Harvest.

Traditionally the Akha hold the Harvest Festival after the harvest of the rice crop.

The City Akha buy the rice from the local market but still hold "Thanksgiving Day"

to celebrate a bountiful year.

Char Puoo

Please don't quote me on the Akha words, I have written as they sound to me.
My Akha wife , who is 48 this year can not read or write Akha, Thai or English.
Some times we even talk at cross purposes. i.e. She hasn't a clue what I am talking about and visa versa. But we get by remarkably well. Her English is O.K. My Thai is limited and my Akha even more so.

7 Chiang Mai Akha Couples marry

This Saturday saw a large congregation of the City Akha at one of the local Christian Churches for seven marriage ceremonies.

The Wedding Party was held on the Church grounds.
The local Catholic Church in Chiang Mai run schools from primary right up to University and probably pre school as well so there were all the amenities for a 7 wedding party.

A bit light on the nosh I thought (and so did most of the people having lunch)
Have to try a different catering company next time.

14 poor families paid good money for that Wedding & Wedding party.

I will try to find out who they were so you don't use them the next time you throw a party in

Chiang Mai.
